![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet. I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. ![]()

The Magic Mountain is also a novel about disease, not merely of individuals, but also of a whole age. Reality as it reveals itself to us is antithetical, and he who wants to begin to comprehend it must risk running the gamut from facet to facet of its nature. The simplifications of reality as Hans Castorp encounters them throughout the book are the object of Mann's irony. Almost nobody is really simple or remains so for long if intelligently observed. The characteristic of such a novel is that it focuses not so much on the hero himself but on the course of his education.Įven if read only on this level, the novel soon makes it clear that Mann did not intend for his readers to take the hero's "simplicity" at face value. This novel, published in 1924 after twelve years of intermittent labor, is the story of the self-development of a "simple, young man." Its hero is the hero of a bildungsroman. ![]() ![]() ![]() Charismatic Bishop Odo of Bayeux commissions a wall hanging, on a scale never seen before, to celebrate his role in the conquest of Britain by his brother William, Duke of Normandy. Yet how much to we actually know about it? Who had it made, and why? Who made it, how and where did they work? Why are its margins full of mythological beasts and rampant naked men, and who were Aelfgytha and her unnamed cleric? Nearly a thousand years after the event, it's unlikely we shall ever know the answers to such questions for sure, but in The Needle in the Blood, I have tried to imagine what they might be and how this great and unique work of art might have changed the lives of the people who brought it into being. The Bayeux Tapestry is so familiar to most of us we might almost think of it as our history's wallpaper. It needed inspiration and something to raise its spirits. ![]() It is set in the midst of the Great Depression that had brought America to its knees. The film Seabiscuit is based on the best-selling novel by Laura Hillenbrand. Charles Howard, the owner, Tom Smith, the trainer, and Red Pollard, the jockey all defied expectations to lead the horse to grandeur. However, when he met three men his life changed and he would become one of the biggest inspirations in the 1930s when people needed it the most. He liked to eat and he liked to sleep – and be rather naughty as well. Seabiscuit was a small horse and a lazy one. Seabiscuit is the story of one of those horses – who rises to levels no one believed he could reach to inspire the community, the country, the world – and the film industry.
